 Fatboys Resort - Gizo, Solomon Islands


The name fatboys is derived from the character ‘Joe’ from the book ‘The Pickwick Papers’ by Charles Dickens.

 The fatboys. life revolves around drinking,eating,sleeping and making every conceivable effort to avoid work.

Whilst at fatboys the customer becomes ‘Joe the Fatboy’.

         
         
   
         

Fatboys Bar & Restaurant itself is situated 100 metres out atop the crystal clear waters of Mbabanga Island

(8 mins boat ride from Gizo,the Provincial Capital of the Western Solomon Islands)

Enjoy an ice cold bevy, a plate of fresh crayfish pan fried in lime juice and butter, a game of pool, or simply kick back and be mesmerized by the myriad of tropical fish swimming underneath you. Our well stocked bar includes a modest wine list and our locally grown produce, including catches of fresh seafood everyday enable us to create mouth-watering dishes for you. We are open for lunch everyday and take bookings for dinner.

Your hosts, Turia Griffiths and Grant Griffiths, an expatriate Australian, naturalized Solomon Islander, have an intimate knowledge of the Western Province and can organise tours, fishing trips, diving, snorkelling and other activities for you. They actively promote economic and social development for the people of the region by supporting local business.

Recently opened tastefully appointed bungalows are situated on the waters edge affording the most magnificent views to Kennedy Island ( JFK fame ) , the majestic volcano Mt Kolombangara and beyond.

 

 

 


Your Bungalows

The bungalows have been constructed using a blend of traditional leaf and local tropical hardwoods. Great care has been taken and the imported furniture and bedding will ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible.  There are 3 bungalows, 2 in a duplex each with 1 Queen size bed and 3 single beds and 1 bungalow with 1 Queen size bed.  They all feature:

Duplex Bungalow :

 
 Sleeps Queen and 3 Singles ( 5 pax ) $180 aud per night.Airport transfers( Nusa Tupe/fatboys return )$15 aud per person.Meal package $60 aud per person.
 
Single Bungalow :
 
Sleeps 2 pax $160 aud.Meal package and transfers as above.

History/ Culture

Ghizo contains much of the Western Province's World War II history with many well preserved American and Japanese war relics still visible on the land and in its waters. Some of the main shops in the township of Gizo are even war relics, being operated out of abandoned American aircraft hangers.

Gizo offers a rich, friendly culture and educational visits to numerous sacred areas can be arranged. To this day, local islanders are famous for producing exquisite, traditionally themed carvings from wood and stone.

Ocean Activities

Reef and wreck dive sites are located conveniently close to Gizo and are known as some of the best in the world.

Visibility is usually upward of 20 meters and water temperature 28C.

Game fishing around Gizo continues to be something that impresses even the most experienced anglers. Marlin, spanish mackerel, sailfish, mahi-mahi, dogtooth tuna, wahoo, dorado, bass, yellowfin tuna, giant trevally and much more abound in Gizo's waters.

Surfing near Fat Boys. Great breaks can be found off two traditionally thatched villages on the island. Pailongge is a barrelling right hander and Titiana a great  left hander found about 800 metres up the road

As well as the nearby Despretes break, Makuti Island and off the sacred Skull Island. A day trip to Skull Island when it's happening will be one the the best surf of your life.

Grant has purchased a couple of new boards for those who choose not to take one with them.

We arrange surf transfer by boat or 4WD access. Please enquire.

The best time for surf is between November and April.

Throughout the year the climate in the Western Province is temperate and does not often fluctuate from between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius.
