Royal Sunset Island Resort .. Tonga

Tonga is one of the last unexplored surfing locations in the world

The Vava'u group of islands in the Kingdom of Tonga offers a unique surf destination for those who are searching for a place where surfing is still an adventure!

Surfer can try a variety of waves all year around. The best time is during our winter season from April - Oct. The summer season is Nov - Mar. It is only a 10 minutes walk from our resort to the best surfing spot in Tonga.

Surf break names like;

Surf Razors, ET's and Looney's - all the offshore reefs can hold large swells and can get heavy. Et's is a right handers heaven with big
barrels and down the line reef breaks waves with a big bend in the middle.

We are exploring other divesites, especially in an area 30NM north west of Atata’ Island where there are 2 volcanoes, Hunga, we are thinking to setup a camp with tent and sleeping bags, cooking catched fish on the beach fire and some other openair activities; this will keep the cost of the 2 days excursion down, especially for large number of divers.

We can use the 40’ catamaran to reach the place towing a fiberglass longboat to reach the shallow waters once there. We don’t have a portable compressor so we need to bring an adequate number of tanks already filled.

The fishing has been HOT - big fish, many fish and lots more. It's time to fish Tonga so come on over and enjoy a little piece of Paradise...

The blue marlin, above, was estimated to be 1020lb - the first marlin caught in Tonga to top the magical 1000lb mark. It was tagged and released from Steve Campbell's Reel Addiction.

With all the Humpback Whales arriving on mass in Vavaú waters, it certainly adds another dimension when you are out fishing – the full aerial breaching, fluke and tail slapping displays are spectacular and when this is combined with Blue furry hook ups at close quarters ….. full aerial jumping, tail walking and screaming 300 meter runs …. Vavaú really is a very special place in the South Pacific.

The inhabitants have been fishing for Yellowfin and Skipjack tuna, Wahoo, Mahimahi and Marlin from open boats for over 100 years.

One of our skippers, Kalua Vave, is now well known and respected on the gamefish circuit. He has won several local tournaments for visiting anglers, and is fully experienced in the latest techniques and IGFA rule sport fishing.

Royal Sunset Sport Fishing caters for experienced, serious fisherfolk, for those who would like to try, learn, and have fun, and for those who want to leave their partners in a superb beachfront location with plenty (or nothing) to do while they fish the virtually untouched waters of Tongatapu.

The resort operates a purpose built 24' launch with 180 hp Mercruiser diesel inboard motor capable of 20 knots. Available for half day or full day fishing.

July has been an absolute ripper and the infamous South Bank grounds have produced some exceptional fishing.

The Blues all ranged from 150kg – 240kg in size and for some reason they must have been feeding on “steroidal yellow fin” - talk about aerial and dirty fighters and that sums up some pretty exciting fishing.

The heaviest Blue caught recently weighed 241.45kg – a great effort for a first time marlin angler.
