Hi Kath,
Well…Tonga truly is beautiful country. We managed to see most of it during our 3 week (extended!) visit. We simply couldn’t leave.
First stop was Otuhaka Beach Resort. Our fale was set amongst the most beautiful tropical garden surrounds with the beach only a 5 second stroll away. Our hosts, Dan and his family are lovely. Very hospitable and were always there for anything we required. We met some great travellers staying there, mostly New Zealanders.
Our first day we saw a whale about 20m from shore, and the next day Pete spotted one only 5 metres from where he was surfing.
After spending 10 days at Otuhaka, we then travelled to a smaller island approx. 150 kms north of Tongatapu called Hapai. Hapai is the most idealic, picturesque tropical island imaginable. Miles of deserted white sandy, coconut tree lined beaches. Unfortunately there is not much surf but it is a place you must see to believe. There are hardly any tourists on this island and the accommodation is fairly basic, but very affordable.
We only got to spend 1 day at the third island called Vavau (approx. 150kms north of Hapai). Apparently there are some awesome surf sports around here, however we did not have time to check them out.
We can’t wait to book our trip for next year.

Surfer can try a variety of waves all year around. The best time is during our winter season from April - Oct.
The summer season is Nov - Mar. It is only a 10 minutes walk from our resort to the best surfing spot in Tonga. |

Tonga- from South to North
|
The Pass - a hollow left which is the most consistent small swell wave around, there's a section, shallow right on the other side that works in the summer season, most southerly break
Motels or Ha'atafu - hollow lefts with fast walls on any size swell.
The Peak - a small right, look out when it's over 4 foot
Corners is a deeper left that has very workable walls, one of the safer spot in Tonga |

Lighthouse is not for the light hearted, a dangerous barrelling right-hander.
Atata Reefs,
Two or three breaks,
depending on the swell direction and reachable only by boat. This is
where you want to be when everywhere else closes out on a S or big
NW. All the privacy you want because you create you own crowd.
The Resort

The resort area is also rich in history ... the first King of Tonga was crowned near here and the current King has a residence just down the beach.
The resort also backs on to the picturesque Ha’atafu marine reserve.
The resort rolls down to a magnificent beach — the perfect place to watch fantastic sunsets! |
